The 19th of April Movement (M-19) founded after alleged fraud in 1970 presidential election. Urban guerrilla group targeting Colombian establishment.
Convinced armed struggle could change Colombia's political and economic system. Adopted pseudonym "Aureliano" (character from One Hundred Years of Solitude).
February 27: M-19 guerrillas storm Dominican Republic embassy during cocktail party. 14 ambassadors taken hostage including US Ambassador. Largest diplomatic hostage-taking in Colombian history.
November 6-7, 1985: 35 M-19 commandos storm Colombia's Supreme Court. ~300 hostages taken including judges and lawyers. Military assault to retake building. Building burns during battle.
Escobar Connection (Disputed): Pablo Escobar allegedly paid M-19 $1-2 million. Extradition case files destroyed in fire. Petro denies cartel funding.
Detained for M-19 guerrilla affiliation. Held during peace negotiations between government and M-19.
M-19 signs peace agreement with Colombian government. Transforms into political party: M-19 Democratic Alliance. Petro released from detention, transitions to politics.
One of first former guerrillas elected to Colombian Congress. Represents M-19 Democratic Alliance party.

Colombia reaches highest cocaine production in decades under Petro's "total peace" policy. US increasingly critical of Petro's approach to drug cartels.
September 27, 2025: US revokes visa after Petro speaks at pro-Palestinian demonstration outside UN Headquarters in New York.
October 19, 2025: President Trump publicly accuses Petro of being "leader of the Colombian cartels."
October 24, 2025: OFAC adds Petro to Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) List.
